Cousin Eddie’s Sausalito Moosenog

Finally a reasonable use for your best moosehead glassware

Listen.  We all know what Cousin Eddie was emptying into the sewer in the timeless Christmas classic film Christmas Vacation.  Furthermore, we all know what was full and needed emptying.  None of that has anything to do with this spirited and zesty cocktail recipe for the festive and joyful season that is presently upon us, if you happen to be reading this in December.

Here we present you an up-leveled cocktail that Cousin Eddie would honestly not have consumed himself, but Clark Griswald surely would’ve happily nogged from his legendary moosehead glassware.  Is this post going too deep on Christmas Vacation, the movie?  You guys HAVE seen it, right?  What are we even doing here?

Anyway, forthwith and onward with the damn recipe.  This is Unsinkable Rye whiskey doing a yeoman’s labor to punch up some store-bought eggnog.

If you don’t have any Allspice Dram lying around (because just maybe you’re a normal person not stockpiling all manner of cocktail-enhancing drams and tinctures), consider replacing with: (a) some extra Angostura bitters or (b) perhaps a wee whisper of spiced rum (a reasonable use for that bottle of Captain Morgan’s someone gave you 12 years ago) or (c) you could make a little allspice syrup buy steeping allspice berries in simple syrup for a few days.

Or whatever.  Let’s not let perfection be the enemy of a warming Christmas buzz around the fireplace.

Ingredients:

2 oz Unsinkable Rye whiskey

1 oz Eggnog

1/2 oz Maple Syrup

1/4 oz Allspice Dram

Dash of Angostura Bitters

Grated nutmeg for garnish

Instructions:

Chill Your Mooseware: Place a cocktail glass in the freezer to chill.  If you own moosehead glassware, this is arguably the only legitimate moment to break it out.

Combine Ingredients: In a shaker, add the rye whiskey, eggnog, maple syrup, allspice dram, and bitters.

Shake with Ice: Fill the shaker with ice and shake vigorously until the mixture is well-chilled.

Strain into Glass: Strain the cocktail into the chilled glass, ensuring a smooth texture.

Garnish: Grate fresh nutmeg over the top if you want to be an absolute badass.
